fish dying problem in new system
on: October 17, 2012, 12:37

i have a new system and try to establish some fingerlings in it. Added 50 pieces last week, and also there are 3 medium sized marron in the same tank. Fingerlings start to die one after the other! No signs for lack of air ,the fish get mad and then die slowly:(
pH is 6.2 and even the marron does not look ok any more
Any suggestions please?

Hey Andrew,

Would like to know the following parameters(guess you have a test kit):ammonia, nitrites, nitrates,pH and water temperature.

Also give me the size of your tank.

The dead fishes have any marks from possible marron attacks?

Two of them had marks from marron, the rest were ok. I used a net border and i separated the tank so now the fishes are not meeting

Andrew,
I can say that the pH level is at the border of stinging …and little bit high nitrite levels too.
You are in need for an immediate 50% change of water,to bring the pH back to the normal and lower the nitrites.
Then I’d salt at 3ppt…. both to alleviate nitrite toxicity (only really needs 1ppt) and for any ICH, or other parasites…. and as a general stress reliever and health tonic for the fish… (needs 3ppt)….
Salting (among other things) stimulates the product of slime coating… a physical barrier to any secondary infections such as fungus or bacteria….
I think you really need to buy a test kit rather than fly blind on these matters ..Andrew

Sure u need to buy the test kit but also something else! U have to neutralize the chlorine in the new water before u add it in your tank!!

we can make our life better
